Within the framework of a joint development project, the municipalities of Győr and Dunaszerdahely are strengthening their sister city relations

Since the summer of 2024, the project implemented with European Union support in the Interreg VI-A Hungary-Slovakia program has been running, within the framework of which the municipalities of Győr and Dunaszerdahely are renewing their two buildings hosting iconic cultural-art events and exhibitions, the Hungarian Ispita in Győr and the Vermes Villa in Dunaszerdahely, and on the other hand, through joint programs and artist meetings, it strengthens its sister city relations.

During the summer, the representatives of the two cities held their project meeting in Dunaszerdahely, during which they informed each other about the progress made in the infrastructural developments and agreed on the tasks and joint tasks of the future. Attila Karaffa, deputy mayor of Dunaszerdahely, presented the city administration's development plans and ideas regarding the city center in a sightseeing walk, and then the partners jointly viewed the Vermes villa, which is under renovation. The interior and exterior construction works of the building are expected to be completed in the fall of this year, after which the local government plans to open the renovated exhibition space as part of a handover ceremony.

The restoration of the Hungarian Ispita in Győr, which started in the spring, gained momentum in the summer, the upstairs windows and doors have now been replaced, the external facade works, the internal electrical, mechanical and earthworks have begun. The construction works of the historic building are carried out under the continuous supervision of the experts of the Office of Cultural Heritage Protection, which is especially necessary for unexpected discoveries that were not foreseen at the time of planning, such as the unknown, dome-covered cellar found in one of the inner atriums during the demolition of the pavement.

In addition to infrastructural developments, the focus of the project is also the strengthening of cultural and artistic relations. During the autumn, the professional partners of the municipalities, the Rómer Flóris Museum of History and Art in Győr, and the experts of the Contemporary Hungarian Gallery, which is maintained by the Benedek Csaplár City Cultural Center in Dunaszerdahely, will host meetings and workshops with the invitation of local and regional artists and art societies, which will provide an opportunity for the mutual acquaintance of the invited artists and professional partners, to present their creations and collections, to plan future joint exhibitions and cooperation opportunities.

The project entitled „SmartAcross - Slovak-Hungarian cooperation for the preservation of local artistic and cultural heritage” with identification number HUSK/2302/2.4/075 is implemented from the European Regional Development Fund and the domestic central budget allocation. The amount of the awarded European Union support is 1,160,000 euros, and the amount of domestic co-financing is 196,500 euros. The amount of EU support for the Hungarian project part is 600,000 euros, with this as 112,500 euros as domestic co-financing. The project partners undertook to provide 93,500 euros of self-reliance for the implementation. The project is scheduled to complete the project on 31.05.2026.
