László Timaffy, geographer, ethnographer and chronicler of Szigetköz, was born 110 years ago

László Timaffy 1916. He was born on April 16 in Mosonszentandras. He lived almost his entire life in this landscape, researching the lifestyle and traditions of his inhabitants. He was a dedicated collector who traveled the countryside with his tape recorder, camera and notebook when he was stigmatized by communism for a while by cutting wood or as a salesman.
His main goal was to „bring knowledge closer to people”, which he tried to enforce during his pedagogical career, passing on the love of folk culture to his countless students. His writings give a comprehensive picture of the ethnography of Szigetköz, Hanság and Rábaköz, which could hardly be talked about without mentioning his name.
This time, we would like to pay tribute to a photograph taken on a collecting trip to his memory and a related object.
In the 1970s, László Timaffy was able to collect and capture many versions of the load-bearing methods that have now completely disappeared from our everyday life. In this way, he enriched the ethnographic literature of our narrower country with irreplaceable additions.
