The local history collection mostly preserves the memories of the period from the second half of the 16th century to the present day, but among certain subject areas we also find ancient and medieval ones.
The material of the collection is very diverse in terms of its nature and theme. The tangible memories, manuscripts, books, and posters were separated into special inventories for the sake of transparency. the most outstanding of these is the guild industry history collection, in which the objects of individual guilds and industrial associations (e.g. guild chests, stamp printers, masterpieces, tools) and rich documents (guild regulations, master's certificates, etc.).
Among the representative artefacts of the city history collection, we can also boast of artefacts from the Turkish era and the Napoleonic period and related to the 1848-49 War of Independence.
The greatest value of the photo collection of more than thirty thousand pieces, containing city photos and portraits, was the talbotypes made by József Skopáll around 1850, in which he immortalized the portraits of the citizens of Győr. are significant yet József Glück’s excellent recordings of Győr at the beginning of the 20th century, and Vilmos Dobos’ photographs of the city bombed in the Second World War.
The local history library includes the nearly 20,000 numismatic collection, but it also includes military history monuments (weapon material, hunting memorabilia). A special piece of this is the saber that belonged to Alajos Sini Sebő 1848-49. modeled after the former owner of Mór Jókai The character of Richard Baradlay in his novel The Sons of a Stone-Hearted Man.
