Archeology

Period
prehistoric-medieval age

The history of the archaeological collection of the Rómer Flóris Museum of Art and History dates back to the second half of the 1800s. Because the namesake of our museum, Benedictine monk, teacher, naturalist, polymath, and archaeologist Rómer Flóris, passionately collected antiquities. It was not by chance that he was called the "father of Hungarian archeology", since he was the one who founded the first rural museum in Győr in 1859. The so-called Fortunately, the "Benedictin collection" survived the nationalization, the multiple moves, and a significant part of it is still part of the archaeological collection.

The archaeological collection now consists of millions of finds, thanks to the various archaeological missions carried out throughout the county (trial and preventive excavations, full surface excavations, archaeological observations, field surveys, etc.). These include weapons (e.g. iron and bronze swords, iron and bronze spears, shields, iron arrowheads, iron knives), jewellery (arm and leg bracelets, rings, necklaces, neck bracelets/torques, clothes pins/fibulae), other objects of costume (e.g. decorative belt, dress and shoe covers), ceramic and metal objects used for food and drink storage (e.g. : clay pots, pans, jugs, bottles, mugs, glasses, and luxury terra sigillata vessels made of special clay and with special techniques: plates, bowls, bronze jugs, bronze cauldrons, etc. ), glass objects (e.g. glasses, perfume vials, glass urns), other commodities (e.g. spindle whorl, loom weights, disentangling hook, spade shoe, harpoons).

A so-called subject index is connected to the inventory books, in which the listed items can be found grouped by location and era. The main archaeological periods are: prehistoric (Neolithic, Copper Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age), Roman period, migration (Hun period/5th century, Avar age), conquest, Middle Ages (Árpád period, late Middle Ages).
