Let's remember the Hungarian heroes together! – First World War memorial walk in downtown

2025 May 25. 16:00 - 17:00

World War I was still in full swing, when a decree was issued to commemorate the soldiers who died in the fighting in a dignified way. From the 1920s, the event received more and more emphasis: the Hungarian Heroes' Memorial Day was always celebrated on the last Sunday of May of that year. In Győr, a monumental monument was erected on Radó Island in 1938 to honor the heroes, but the various districts, state and church institutions also immortalized the cult of their heroes to the best of their ability. During our city walk, we will visit two monuments: the program starts from the obelisk on Radó Island, then entering the hall of the Rómer Flóris Museum, we can see a small compilation of the museum's World War II relics. Finally, we visit the memorial plaque of the Győr house regiment, the legendary K.U.K. 19th Infantry Regiment, on the side of the cathedral. The walk is led by: historian-museologist Zoltán Cserhalmi (Rómer Flóris Museum of Art and History)
