The Carpathian Basin in the Bronze Age - Modern Bioroarcheuting Results from the perspective of an anthropologist
Archaeological research in the prehistoric Carpathian basin has shown many significant cultural and population changes. Among these changes, there were also those - for example, at the end of the Copper Age, at the beginning of the Bronze Age, the appearance of the Yamnaya culture of steppe origin - which also had a serious impact on the genetic stock of today's European populations. In addition to the analysis of a significant migration event, measured on a continental scale, it is also important for domestic research to research questions related to the appearance of the late Bronze Age mass grave culture around 1500 BC. In prehistoric times, this is one of the rare periods when a relatively uniform archaeological legacy or finds spread in almost the entire territory of today's Hungary. Moreover, at that time, significant changes took place not only in the material culture, but also in the structure of the settlements. The population left the settlements they had used for hundreds of years in the area of the Great Plain and changed their residence much more often than before. At the same time, it was not entirely clear before whether the appearance of the mass grave culture was a consequence of immigration, or whether the types of objects, the burial rite, were the result of the internal development of native local groups in the area, as well as whether the observed changes in the settlement structure were accompanied by a significant change in lifestyle. In recent years, many projects have been launched to answer the above questions. In the presentation, in addition to an overview of previous anthropological research results, we also present the results of several recently concluded bio-archaeological projects.
