The story of one of Mihály Munkácsy's most famous and monumental works, the painting of the Hungarian Conquest, is brought to life in a sensational new exhibition at the Rómer Museum, open from 21 June. The huge painting, 13.5 m wide and over 4 m high, was created for the Parliament and is still on display in the Munkácsy Hall, named after the painter. The story of the creation of this grandiose work of art spans four years between 1890 and 1894, from the idea to the final brushstroke. The composition, which the painter refers to only as Árpád, depicts the founding of the country as a peaceful event: the triumphant Prince Árpád, accompanied by the seven chieftains, receives the homage of the peoples living here amidst the celebrations of the conquering Hungarians. While the scene evokes the well-known legend of the conquest, Munkácsy also sought to make use of the historical-archaeological knowledge of the late 19th century by depicting costumes and weapons with autenthicity and accuracy. In addition to striving for authenticity, however, he also used playful solutions such as painting some of the figures in portraits: the observant viewer can thus meet the great storyteller Mór Jókai among the squatters, or the freedom-fighting heroic general István Türr.
The artist painted the two half-sized, more than 6-meter-wide and 2-m-high-own painting versions presented at the exhibition during the preparation of the final image. These paintings, as well as contemporary documents, photographs and objects, guide the visitor through the creative process in an experiential way, giving a glimpse not only into the behind-the-scenes secrets of Munkácsy's studio, but also into the intrigues surrounding the placement of the painting. In the meantime, the entire career of the painter prince and the cult of his person, which is still alive today, flash.
The exhibition is the first stage of the travelling exhibition Munkácsy Art Mission: the Birth of the Image of the Hungarian Occupation in Győr, organised by Munkácsy Art Event Management Ltd.

“Conquest vs. Conquest”
Museum history lesson for grades 5-12 in the "Munkácsy - Birth of a masterpiece" in the exhibition entitledDuration: 45-50 minutes
The focus of the interactive session is the confrontation of the famous Munkácsy picture and the historical process of the conquest. During the lesson, we examine from a historical perspective how Munkácsy immortalizes the important series of events of the Hungarian nation and how the painting reflects the 19th-century Hungarian conception of history. In connection with the exhibited monumental sketches, we recall the events of the conquest and the conditions of the Carpathian Basin at that time. We are also looking for an answer to how artistic creations shape national memory.
