The jubilee temporary exhibition of the 60-year-old painter will be held in Magyar Ispita.

Károly Szalkai was born in Győr and graduated from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 1989. He has been living and creating in Győr since the beginning of the nineties. Since 1996, he has been a teacher at the Győr School of Dance and Fine Arts. He is a multiple awardee of the Győr County Autumn Exhibition, a founding member of the Raab-Art and Art Flexum art societies, and is also a member of the National Association of Hungarian Artists and the Society of Hungarian Painters. He regularly appears in independent and group exhibitions, and his works can be found in public and private collections.

For Károly Szalkai, painting is a discovery, an opportunity to experience the inner path. In his lyrical abstract paintings, he mainly uses earth colors, ochre and reddish colors. His favorite technical solution is sawdust and sand mixed with acrylic paint and woodworking glue, with which he creates rustic, earth-like surfaces, thus achieving an archaic effect. These technical experiments are the defining elements of his creative activity. The squares, the line, as well as the symbolic landscape in the compositions of a recurring central motif. By applying metal fibers, it also includes the glistening light in the image creation. Recently, the terrestrial material in his pictures was supplemented with atmospheric details, the airy effect was achieved by facilitating black canvas with alkali. The artist is also concerned with the influence of music and painting on each other. Musical moods and feelings appear as active energy flows in his works, thereby making his compositions moving.

The retrospective exhibition opening at 5:00 p.m. in Magyar Ispita (9022 Győr, Nefelejcs köz 3.) on September 12, 2026 will present a selection of the work of Károly Szalkai, which can be viewed until October 11, 2026, every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., except Mondays.
