I found an artifact, what should I do?

Anyone can find an archaeological find during earthworks, whether during everyday gardening, plowing, planting trees or building (foundation, road construction, public utility laying). In such cases, we can find fragments of vessels, bones, and metal objects that indicate the archaeological site. Most of the archaeological sites become known for such coincidences. If this occurs, it is the duty of the finder to stop the earthwork on the affected parts, to secure the findings and notify the relevant museum. "It's not worth - and it's forbidden! - to "further research", rummage, and look for findings at the disturbed location, because that would do more harm than good, by the way, it can be dangerous."

The Rómer Flóris Art and History Museum has county-wide jurisdiction in Győr-Moson-Sopron County. In the settlements of Mosonmagyaróvár and its surroundings, the Hanság Museum (9200 Mosonmagyaróvár, Fő utca 19., www.hansagimuzeum.hu) has an archaeological collection, and the Sopron Museum (9400 Sopron, Fő tér 8., in the Sopron district. www.sopronimuzeum.hu).

We can receive a find as a gift, inherit or find it thanks to chance, so we can get it in many ways, even legally. The possession of the findings is therefore not against the law, but targeted collection research at an archaeological site is strictly prohibited. The most suitable place of storage for the finds is in the museum, where there are specialists who can professionally determine, clean and preserve the finds. In the absence of expert hands, the found may be completely destroyed within weeks, months, or certain materials, even within days. It is therefore worth offering the finds to a museum. If we know the exact location of their discovery, we will also state it indefinitely, as this way we can even contribute to the recognition of a new site.
