gingerbread molds

catalog

The first ethnographic catalog of the Rómer Flóris Art and History Museum in Győr presents the gingerbread shapes for a reason. Through the sample treasure of the 202 shaped tree workshops in the Győr and around Győr, the style features of the gingerbread workshops in Győr and around Győr emerge.

During the 19th century, several well-known puppeteer masters worked in Győr, a few of whom worked on the fish of our city
They gained authority too much for themselves. In our collection, carvings from puppets from more distant regions also appear, which can also become more widely known through the arrangement in the catalog, providing an opportunity for comparative studies and further research.

The gingerbread mold is the tool used to pattern aged dough made from honey and mostly rye flour. The stretched - sometimes cut-to-form - raw dough was pressed by hand into the wooden pattern, after some drying, it was knocked out, and after further resting, it was baked in the oven. The molds were usually carved by the master puppeteer himself or his young man, but it was not uncommon for a goldsmith, wood or copper engraver, or local carpenter to be entrusted with this task requiring great skill.
