Abott's House
One of the most beautiful baroque palaces in Győr has been the exhibition space of our museum since 1949. The buildings on the site of today's museum were purchased by the benedict Abbey of Pannonhalma, which was built together by Abbot Benedek Sajghó in the early 1740s. The gate and the closed balcony, which was popular in the 17th and 18th centuries, were placed in the central axis of the facade facing the square, accentuated with a tympanum. Next to the closed balcony, on the upper floor, there is a full-length statue of St. Stephen (from left) and St. Benedict (from the right) in a semi-circular niche. The parapet of the balcony is adorned with the coat of arms of the abbey. The representative house of Abbey changed hands several times. It was first used as a barracks and then as an orphanage. In 1802, when the order was restored, the Benedictines took it again, and in 1816 it was handed over to the Győr Cathedral for priest education. In 1857, the Small Seminary operated here, and from 1910 the College of the Teacher Training College. It became the home of the museum from 1949. Currently, the Rómer Flóris Museum of Art and History uses the building awaiting renovation as an event venue.
The first large-scale exhibition was completed in 1954, and a permanent exhibition presenting the history of Győr and its surroundings could be visited from 1988-2013. In addition, the Petz family's legacy (medical history, fine and applied arts exhibition) and the private collection of the Abád-Hauser family were housed in a separate room. In the corridor of the museum building, visitors could also view the collection of the Hungarian Post's Stamp Museum as a permanent exhibition, which gave an image of domestic stamp production from 1871 to 1987. The Madách collection received an independent exhibition, the prominent part of which is the volumes of the Tragedy of Man published in different languages and the posters of its theater performances. In addition, the building also hosted temporary exhibitions.
