Bishop's Court House
The former Bishop's Court House, originally built in the late Gothic style, is located in the oldest historic quarter of the city centre, on the Chapter Hill, near the statue of St Michael and the Chapel of St László in the Episcopal Cathedral.
During the shelling of the Győr castle in 1809, ordered by Napoleon, the building was also seriously damaged. In 1811, Bishop József Vilt had the significant restoration work on the building complex restored to its original state. The plaque on the courtyard facade commemorates the benevolent act of the noble-minded bishop.
The two-story building with bronze gates and its window divisions, reminiscent of late Gothic, has acquired its current, final form as a result of renovation works, as opposed to the southeastern side of the cathedral. These works lasted from the mid-1970s to 1979, when the permanent exhibition was opened.
After the restoration of the building, thanks to the work of architect Anna Hulyák, the interiors preserved their original atmosphere, and thus managed to preserve the flawless, contemporary harmony of the historic environment.
The building was opened to the public on November 4, 1979, with the exhibition of his life's work, selected and directed by the sculptor Miklós Borsos.
The temporary exhibition space welcomes visitors with chamber exhibitions, while in the basement with museum pedagogy sessions.
