One of the most striking cultural characteristics of ancient Mexico and Guatemala is the temple pyramids. They are there in the main squares of the huge ruined cities, but they can also be found in small hidden settlement centers. There are those reaching a height of 60-70 meters, but there are only one or two meters in the inner courtyards of palace complexes.
Behind the “pyramid mania” of the ancient Mexicans is the belief that the mountains they revere as sacred are the source of life. They hide the seeds of food plants, from there the rivers originate and the rain clouds rise, and their ancestors also live there. These mythical mountains were symbolically moved to the main squares of their settlements, a church was built on top of them, sacrifices were placed inside or at their feet and their rulers were buried there. And in general, these were considered the center of the universe, from which the world tree, often depicted in the form of corn, sprouts.
