the island Jewish cemetery
The Jewish cemetery on the island is not only a burial place for Jewish citizens who lived in the district, but also for the Jews of Győr in general. Since its opening in 1826, many personalities have been buried here who are worthy of memory not only from the point of view of the history of the Jewish community, but also from the history of the city of Győr: merchants, industrialists, doctors, lawyers, engineers and teachers. The cemetery is also extremely significant from a historical point of view, as the only contiguous 19th-century part of the cemetery is located here. The ceremonial building established in 1868, the interior of which is decorated with biblical frescoes, is also special in the national context. The memory of the victims killed during the Second World War is preserved in the martyr monument inaugurated in 1947.
