Participation fee:

Presentation by Mihály Sárkány, ethnologist, professor emeritus, senior researcher at the Institute of Ethnography of the ELTE Human Sciences Research Center

Africa has always been a part of the world, its history and socio-cultural development were influenced by influences from other regions of the world, but the peoples living there, especially south of the Sahara, still preserve several features of their culture, which seem characteristically African to the outside. This stands above all for the objects that we Europeans classify as works of art, but their creation is closely linked to the ideas, actions and requirements that determine the continuity and order of social existence. They also reflect where man belongs in the world - in his life and in his dead. The presentation provides an overview of these works, also focusing on everyday objects, which are also true in Africa that man creates according to the law of beauty.
The presentation is closely related to our ethnographic exhibition, which will open on May 18, 2026 at the Vastuskós Ház.
